We’re catching up with the brilliant minds behind the work – diving into their creative journeys, standout moments and what keeps them inspired both in and outside the studio. Meet Marine Ng Cheong Sang!
What sparked your journey into graphic design – was there a defining moment?
I studied industrial design and sociology – not graphic design. But I was always passionate about illustration and kept practicing alongside. After graduating from Shanghai University, I realised China could offer me the chance to live off that passion. So instead of going into industrial design, I started freelancing as an illustrator and brand designer. Landing gigs with IBM and PepsiCo confirmed for me: this is what I wanted to do with my life!
What’s been your favourite project at Coley Porter Bell so far and why?
Working with Primark was a dream – full of fun, colour and energy it gave us the freedom to be bold and break a few rules in the best way!
What’s the most inspiring exhibition, show, or creative experience you’ve had recently?
Some recent live drawing sessions. Going back to basics can be so humbling. It reminded me that nothing is ever guaranteed – we have to keep practicing and pushing ourselves, even more so as we grow.
Tell us something about you that might surprise people…
I’m the third generation in my family to migrate across continents – my grandparents left China for Mauritius, my father left Mauritius for France, and now I’m in London. Movement and change have always been part of our story!
If you had a superpower – real or metaphorical – what would it be and why?
Shape-shifting. I love the idea of being able to see the world through different forms and perspectives. In design, like in life, being able to take on different lenses helps us build empathy, challenge assumptions, and ultimately create work that really connects.
